Happy “You’re an Adult” Day

This past Thursday, October 12, was my 26th birthday. My plan had been to post something heartfelt and meaningful, reflecting on 26 years of life, but occasionally I get an idea in my head and it simply won’t come out onto paper (or in this case, screen). So I took a few days to think about it.

Instead, I couldn’t help but ponder all of the ridiculous adult things I had to do for the first time this year, or consider what adult things have become a regular occurrence in my life.

It’s become a common theme among my friends: are we really “adults” when we sure-as-anything don’t feel like them? Don’t adults have it all together? I mean, my mom had three kids by 26 and I can’t fathom the idea of one. Well, friends, I am now closer to 30 than to 20, and yes, I am an adult. This is how I know:

26 Ways You Know You’re an Adult…

I Fail at Birthdays

This past week was one of my favorite, low-key holidays: Valentines Day. Now, this wasn’t always on my list of favorites, especially thinking back to the single-girl days when I wouldn’t even get notes from admirers (let’s face it, I didn’t have any). But having spent the past 7 valentines days in a committed relationship, I love it. My husband knows the exact flowers I love, has some sort of chocolate-covered sweet delivered (which I promptly eat half of and wish I had saved some), and we usually plan some sort of meal/celebration around the holiday. He knows that displays of affection like that are part of my love language, and he does a great job at making me feel special.

Then February 15th hits, his birthday, and every year I feel like I fail at showing him the same love he’s shown me just the day before.

Travel: Barnard, Vermont

Dear Friend,

This past weekend, I fell in love with the state of Vermont.

My husband and I had been talking about getting away for my birthday, but had a hard time coming up with dates that were feasible for both of us. My birthday was sandwiched in-between two out-of-state trips for my husband, and then the following weekend I had obligations with my church. We decided to hold off any plans that would try to keep up busy, and this past weekend we made our way to Barnard, Vermont.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Dear Friend,

I feel like it has been forever since I’ve been able to sit down to write. In reality, it’s only been 2 weeks, but these weeks have flown by. All I can say is that the huge event at work that our department has spent over a year planning was this past weekend. It was intense–every day felt like 2 or 3 days smashed together, with only a few hours of sleep between them. But I am finally home, have had a couple days to rest, and had a lovely celebration of my birthday.

As I turn 25 years old today, I’m feeling a bit introspective about my life. Honestly, I’ve spent a few days feeling this way and thinking about how my life has changed in only a few years. Five years ago when I entered my 20’s, I was a senior in college, dating my now-husband for a little over a year, and I had no idea of where my life would lead. Honestly, it’s a testament to God’s faithfulness that I am where I am today with a loving husband and a job that I enjoy.
